Safe fuel change over system HFO-MGO-HFO

California Air Resources Board

Marine Notice 2009-1

Fuel Requirement Effective Date Fuel

Phase I July 1, 2009* Marine gas oil (DMA) at or below 1.5% sulfur; or Marine diesel oil (DMB) at or below 0.5% sulfur

Phase II January 1, 2012 Marine gas oil (DMA) or Marine diesel oil (DMB) at or below 0.1% sulfur

*All initial effective dates have been administratively aligned to begin July 1, 2009.

Today you will mostly reduced the speed to minimum and have to change over in one step.  Now you have to hope that all items inside of the fuel systems are working fast enough (viscometer, pre heater, etc.) and that the volume inside of the booster circuit is big enough to avoid fast temperature changing. Unfortunately often some injection pumps will be damaged and raise repair cost of 10.000 US$ up to 50.000,00 US$ or more.

Since July 2009 all vessels have to use in the area of 24 miles before the coastline from California low Sulphur fuel (mostly distillate like MGO). Within ECA areas the fuel has also to be changed over to low Sulphur fuel.

Technical wise this could create a lot of problems and specially damages on the injection pumps. For example MAN 2-stroke engine is a limit set of max. 2° C fuel temperature changing per minute to protect the injection equipment.

Actually this change over process is very risky out of missing technical solutions. We all know that we are talking about a temperature drop/ increase of approx. 100 °C,

The LEMAG DIESELswitch (patent held by MAN DIESEL, Denmark) is able to manage a safe change over from HFO – MGO –HFO. (For MAN engines only)

The DIESELswitch controls the speed of temperature changing and will stop the automatic process if the speed is to fast and send an alarm signal. This will absolute minimize your risk. and safe a lot of money.

DIESELswitch

FOR SWITCHING OVER FROM HFO to MDO/MGO AND VICE VERSA

  • Automated and controlled change over process
from HFO to MDO/MGO and vice versa

  • Minimized risk of damages due to abrupt temperature changes

  • Change over running at full load possible

  • Easy to install on newbuilds and existing vessels

  • Robust and reliable design

The new DIESELswitch is designed to carry out the change-over process between heavy fuel oil and low sulphur fuel automatically and safely.

The DIESELswitch also enables the operator to switch fuels running at full load, as sensors will detect if the fuel temperature changes too rapidly. The system will then freeze the position to protect the engine’s fuel injection system from a thermal shock and generate an alarm. For safety the fuel change-over process can also be stopped manually.

The DIESELswitch is safe and simple to operate.
All you have to do is:

  1. Choose time frame for change over

  2. Choose change over direction
    (HFO -> MDO/MGO or MDO/MGO -> HFO)

  3. Start the process!

The DIESELswitch S

The DIESELswitch S consists of the following parts for easy installation on newbuilds:

  • Safety change over valve
with magnetic coupling to prevent leakages
  • Static mixing tube
  • Electronic cabinet with advanced software

For retrofit solutions the DIESELswitch 1 is delivered on a foundation containing all system components, pipes and internal cabling.

If the difference in supply pressure of both fuels is too large it will also be necessary to install the DIESELswitch 2, which consists of a complete pump module to adjust the pressures accordingly.

A tamper-proof data logger can be connected to prove that the correct fuel was used in regulated areas. It is also possible to integrate a flow and density meter to calculate total fuel consumption.
